The Center for Public Policy & Social Research at Central Connecticut State University is dedicated to enriching the quality of public policy, public service, University outreach and applied research in Connecticut. We provide a wide range of information, training, research and consulting services to communities, municipal and state government and non-profit organizations. We develop, facilitate, and support faculty and student projects, which advance their scholarship, applied research and real life experiences. Eileen Hurst, the Associate Director of the Center for Public Policy and Social Research, is a Second Step instructor trained by Committee for Children. Ms. Hurst provides training at the CCSU campus and on-site in Connecticut school districts and youth agencies. Second Step training is offered to teachers, administrators, psychologist, school counselors, social workers and youth workers as a continuing education course. Teachers are granted CEUs for completion of the entire course.
Committee for Children is the creator of the Second Step program. Located in Seattle, Washington, Committee for Children is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to foster the social and emotional development, safety, and well-being of children through education and advocacy. They develop and publish violence, bullying, and sexual abuse prevention curricula for children from preschool through middle school as well as an early literacy program for young children. Committee for Children programs are now used at 25,000 schools in 21 countries around the world such as Japan, Mexico, Norway, and Kurdistan (Iraq). Since the 1970s, they have been partnering with experts at leading universities and organizations to explore healthy child development and the link between academic achievement and social and emotional competency.
