Image of Matthew SilverDr. Matthew Silver (left), a historian and media specialist from Israel, is the visiting professor to Central Connecticut State University from Emek Yezreel College in Israel during the spring 2005 term. Through the partnership agreement between CCSU and Emek Yezreel College, Dr. Silver has been teaching courses in the CCSU Communication Department on Media and the Middle East. Emek Yezreel, located in the Western Galilee region of Israel, has very similar student demographics as CCSU, he noted.

In a special program co-sponsored by the George R. Muirhead Center for International Education, the Communication Department, and the President’s Office, which was held in Founder’s Hall on March 7, Silver convened a panel of Emek Yezreel students and faculty members, who were visiting the area, to provide the CCSU community a first-hand opportunity to learn more about college life on an Israeli campus. Silver observed that a significant feature of life at Emek Yezreel is the great diversity among the faculty and student body. In fact, at least 25% of the students are non-Jewish Arabs, and the campus is considered a strong model of an intercultural and egalitarian college environment.

Born in the U.S., Silver received his B.A. degree from Cornell University and completed his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Modern Jewish History at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He emigrated to Israel in 1984–1985, and served in the Israeli Defense Forces as a Sergeant. He has taught a number of topics in Jewish history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and served on the Ha’aretz newspaper editorial staff. During his year in the Hartford area, Silver has also been the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford Visiting Professor in Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford and Trinity College. An expert in Middle Eastern affairs, Silver is a frequent guest on The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer on PBS and a contributor to area newspapers, including the Hartford Courant and Jewish Ledger.
