CENTRAL CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY: IT'S HISTORY AND MISSION
Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) is a metropolitan, comprehensive public university which was founded in 1849 as New Britain Normal School, a teacher training facility. CCSU currently enrolls approximately 6,000 full-time students and nearly 6,000 part time students with a full-time faculty of more than 400 members. The campus is located in a suburban area of New Britain, CT, and is part of the greater Hartford metropolitan area in central Connecticut. It is equidistant from New York City and Boston.
Our University exists to serve students. With learning at the heart of all our activities, our fundamental responsibility is to empower students to attain the highest standards of academic achievement, public service and personal development. Preparing students for enlightened and productive participation in a global society is our obligation. Our programs an activities must be infused with a rich multicultural perspective. We value quality, intellectual integrity, openness to debate, participation by all members of the community in governance and respect for the dignity, rights and aspirations of each member of the community.
Student Development in Higher Education - Master's Degree Program Focus
The mission of the student development master's degree program is to prepare graduates to function effectively as student development specialists in rapidly changing institutions of higher education. Students are trained to understand and to meet the developmental needs of college students taking into account worldviews and expectations which are influenced by age, ethnic background, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability status and other "non-traditional" perspectives.
Academic Expectations
The program requires 42-45 hours of study in counseling, student
development and higher education including at least 9 credit hours
of fieldwork in one or two area colleges. The program is built
on a counseling orientation and is designed to integrate counseling
and problem solving skills into a developmental and educational
orientation. Courses include Theories and Techniques of Counseling,
Career Counseling, Multicultural Counseling, Program Design in Student Services,
Theories of College Student Development, Student Services, Legal, Financial and
Policy Issues in Student Affairs, Group
Dynamics and Applied Research as well as the internship and one elective.
Admission to the Graduate School requires an undergraduate GPA
of at least 2.7 with an upper division GPA of 3.0. Admission occurs
in two stages- first to the graduate school and then to the specific
program. The process is explained to prospective students at the
time of application. Students must maintain at least a B average
to remain in good standing.
Assistantships
The university offers a number of assistantships in student
affairs offices and other offices on campus. In addition, several
residential assistantships are available at area colleges. Application
for on campus assistantships may be made at the time of application
for admission through the graduate admissions office. For information
on off-campus assistantships contact Dr. Jane Fried. Assistantships
often provide students with opportunities to gain experience in
student affairs, but they are not considered part of an academic
program.
Other Professional Opportunities
Within a 25 mile radius of CCSU there are at least 4 community-technical colleges, 2 regional campuses of the University of Connecticut, two private universities of international stature, 2 private colleges and one graduate school and a medical/dental school. Within 50 miles of our campus there are at least ten more institutions of higher education. Each of these institutions provides a potential site for either full-time employment of internships opportunities.
