BASICS

Brief Alcohol Screening Interview for College Students

Are you worried about your drinking?  How about your friends?

Basics is designed for students who typically drink heavily several times a week, and have already experienced alcohol related problems.

The Goal is to reduce the frequency of risky behaviors including quantity of drinking per occasion and decreasing the harmful effects of drinking.

Because lifestyle changes occur gradually over time, harm reduction emphasizes and encourages step-by-step changes in which any movement in the direction of reduced risk and harm is progress.

                                          What is Basics?

Basics consists of two 60 minute sessions with a counselor.

  • The first is to assess drinking patterns, related attitudes about alcohol, and motivation to change drinking.
  • The second is to get feedback about personal risk factors and advice about ways to moderate drinking.

Although basics is primarily for students who are high-risk alcohol users the program also gives some feedback related to other drugs.

The BASICS sessions are entirely confidential, and we will not disclose any information
from the sessions to anyone without the student's permission.

For a BASICS appointment please call the Counseling and Wellness Center at 832-1945.  Identify yourself as a BASICS client and ask for an appointment with either Victoria Ginter or Magda Wawrzyniak.
