The Speed of Light: Print, Pictures, News & Sports A top editor at ESPN who is a former managing editor of Rolling Stone magazine and U.S. News & World Report will be the keynote speaker Nov. 30 in Founders Hall at a conference on Journalism and Communication called "The Speed of Light: Print, Pictures, News and Sports." The conference is open to all. John A. Walsh, executive editor and executive vice president of ESPN,will speak at 3:30 p.m. on "A Journalist's Journey in Print, Broadcast and Cyberspace." In addition to his broadcast and magazine experience, Walsh worked as an editor at The Washington Post and Newsday. Walsh's talk will be preceded by an alumni panel discussion and a presentation on visual images and ethics. The panel, at 1:15 p.m., will feature four recent alumni of Central working in Communication and Journalism. Joanna Mechlinski ('02), Darren Sweeney ('98), Brendan McKenna ('02) and Sara Ziegler ('04) will discuss "Some Things We've Learned About Journalism and Communication." At 2:15 p.m., John Long, a photojournalist and photo editor for The Hartford Courant, will give a talk and visual presentation on "Journalism Ethics in the Age of Digital Photography." The conference begins at 1 p.m. Refreshments will be served from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. The conference is sponsored by the Robert C. Vance Foundation, the Communication Department, the Journalism Program of the English Department, and the School of Arts and Sciences.
