Type of Visa

Description Study Requirements Employment Restrictions

F-1

Student Visa Holder.
Maintain full time study.
Part time only with approval from the ISSS office.
On Campus: Work 20 hours during the semester, 40 hours during vacation.
May participate in CPT (Full time or part time). Authorization is required.
May participate OPT not to exceed 12 months (during or after end of program)-apply through USCIS-EAD card required.
Severe Economic Hardship-apply through USCIS-EAD Card required.

F-2

Dependent of
F-1 Visa Holder.
Spouse- Cannot engage in full time study or can engage in vocational or recreational part time study is permitted.
Children-Can engage in full time study (k-12).
Not permitted to work.

J-1

Exchange Student  Full time enrollment.
Work 20 hours during the semester, 40 hours during vacation.
May participate in off campus work -Academic Training. Authorization is required.

J-2

Dependent of
Exchange Student
May engage in part or full time study. Eligible to work –EAD required through USCIS.

B1/B2

Visitor for
Business/Tourism
May not begin in any ‘Course of Study’ (F/T or P/T) unless approved by USCIS.
Can engage in casual short-term classes that are not incidental to the primary purpose of the alien’s presence in the U.S. such as ‘Single English or Craft Class’ would not constitute a ‘Course of Study’.
Not permitted to work.

H1-B

Work Visa for

May engage in incidental study Work with sponsoring organization

May engage in full time or part time study. Not permitted to work.
