Intensive English Language and American Culture

Twenty hours per week of academic English language
training

Five levels offered, ranging from beginner to
advanced

Skill areas include listening/speaking and
reading/writing/grammar

Language laboratory and computer work included

Free institutional TOEFL exam offered at end of each
session
Transition Program

Eight hours per week of
integrated skills focusing strongly on university preparation

3 credit
course for undergraduate students/non-credit for graduate students
-
International students (F-1 visa) also register for
two university credit-courses
-
Credits earned in the Transition program may be
applied to an undergraduate or graduate program at CCSU upon formal
acceptance into a planned program of study

Enrollment by placement exam only

Free institutional TOEFL exam offered at the end of
each session

Certification -
Certificates of attendance, achievement, or
advancement will be awarded to students who successfully complete course
and program requirements.

Course Description:

this is a non-credit reading, writing and academic language skills
program for advanced-level non-native speakers of English.

in reading, students will
expand vocabulary, increase speed of comprehension and become
familiar with strategies for analyzing and responding to
authentic texts

in
writing, students will
refine
organizational skills, development of ideas, clarity and mechanics
of affective writing in a variety of rhetorical modes

in
listening/speaking, student will
practice
listening to lectures
and taking
appropriate notes; participating in
group discussions and formal presentations
-
students will also acquire
knowledge of level-appropriate structures of English grammar
