The Intensive
English Language Program offers English language instruction to
international students and faculty, foreign professionals and
members of the Connecticut community. The Intensive English
Language Program includes classroom instruction in reading, writing,
conversation and TOEFL preparation. Students are placed in the
appropriate level based on the results of a placement test, which is
administered the first day of the course. IELP also administers an
institutional TOEFL test five times a year. Call for dates and
location. Field trips and social outings are arranged each session,
free of charge.

approach, demonstrating knowledge of various rhetorical modes,
overall coherence, and greater sentence variety. In addition,

This is an intensive academic course designed to improve the
listening and speaking skills needed for advanced level non-native
speakers of English to succeed in an academic setting. In this
course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will
develop their ability to comprehend as well as enjoy a variety of
authentic and semi-authentic recordings. Students will also actively
participate in lively and meaningful group discussions, classroom
debates and presentations.

in reading, writing, and grammar skills for lower-advanced level
non-native speakers of English. In this course, students will
continue to expand vocabulary and will increase the speed at which

mechanics of effective writing in a variety of rhetorical modes. In
addition, students will acquire knowledge of level-appropriate
structures of English grammar.

Description:
This is an intensive 16-week / 160-
hour integrated skills course for transition- level non-native
speakers of English. In this course, students will improve the
accuracy and speed at which spoken and written English are
comprehended. They will also improve the effectiveness of their
speech and writing through a variety of task-based activities.
Students will become familiar with strategies for analyzing and
responding to authentic texts, for composing expository and
argumentative pieces, and for writing timed essays. In addition,
students will acquire knowledge of level-appropriate structures of
English grammar.
