The Intensive English Language Program offers English language instruction to international students and faculty, foreign professionals and members of the Connecticut community.  The Intensive English Language Program includes classroom instruction in reading, writing, conversation and TOEFL preparation.  Students are placed in the appropriate level based on the results of a placement test, which is administered the first day of the course.   IELP also administers an institutional TOEFL test five times a year.  Call for dates and location. Field trips and social outings are arranged each session, free of charge.

 Listening/Speaking I (IELP 101)

Description: This is an intensive introduction to pre-academic listening, speaking, and grammar skills for beginning-level non-native speakers of English. In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will develop the basic communication and survival skills necessary to begin studying English for academic purposes.

Reading/Writing I (IELP 102)         

Monday - Friday 1:00 pm-3:00pm

Description: This is an intensive introduction to pre-academic reading, writing, and grammar skills for beginning-level non-native speakers of English.  In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will develop basic communication and survival skills necessary to begin studying English for academic purposes.

Description: This is an intensive introduction to academic listening, speaking and functional grammar skills for high-beginning level, non-native speakers of English. In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will focus on acquiring a foundation of active vocabulary and functional grammar that they will need to begin academic studies in English. They will also continue with some more advanced survival English.

Reading/Writing II   (IELP 202)      

Monday - Friday 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

Description: This is an intensive introduction to academic reading, writing, and grammar skills for high-beginning level, non-native speakers of English.  In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will increase vocabulary, will develop ability to comprehend the main idea of a text, and will acquire basic composition skills through a process approach.   In addition, students will acquire knowledge of level- appropriate structures of English grammar.

Description: This is an intensive academic course in listening, speaking and functional grammar skills for lower-intermediate level non-native speakers of English. In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will further develop their oral and aural skills for more extensive communication. They will also practice lower-intermediate academic oral and aural language skills in preparation for future academic success.

Reading/Writing III (IELP 302)        

Monday -Friday 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

Description: This is an intensive academic course in reading, writing, and grammar skills for lower-intermediate level non-native speakers of English.  In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will increase vocabulary, will improve reading comprehension through a fluency-based approach, and will develop ability to write compositions through a process approach, demonstrating knowledge of various rhetorical modes, overall coherence, and greater sentence variety.  In addition, students will acquire knowledge of level-appropriate structures of English grammar.

In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will further develop their oral and aural skills for more extensive communication. They will also practice higher-intermediate academic oral and aural language skills in preparation for future academic success.

Reading/Writing IV (IELP 402)        

Monday - Friday 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

Description: This is an intensive academic course in reading, writing, and grammar skills for higher-intermediate level non-native speakers of English.  In this course, students will expand upon skills acquired in IELP 302.  They will become more independent readers.  In writing, they will develop their process writing skills further by demonstrating knowledge of more complex rhetorical modes such as comparison/contrast and opinion essays, and will develop a greater awareness of sentence boundaries.  In addition, students will acquire knowledge of level-appropriate structures of English grammar.

Description: This is an intensive academic course designed to improve the listening and speaking skills needed for advanced level non-native speakers of English to succeed in an academic setting. In this course, which is divided into two 8-week sessions, students will develop their ability to comprehend as well as enjoy a variety of authentic and semi-authentic recordings. Students will also actively participate in lively and meaningful group discussions, classroom debates and presentations.

Reading/Writing V (IELP 452)        

Monday - Friday 1:00 pm-3:00 pm

Description: This is an intensive academic course in reading, writing, and grammar skills for lower-advanced level non-native speakers of English.  In this course, students will continue to expand vocabulary and will increase the speed at which authentic materials are comprehended.  In writing, they will refine organizational skills, development of ideas, clarity and the mechanics of effective writing in a variety of rhetorical modes.  In addition, students will acquire knowledge of level-appropriate structures of English grammar.

INTENSIVE ENGLISH LANGUAGE & AMERICAN CULTURE:  (“Transition”)

IELP 199         FEE: $2,100  

 16-weeks:  September 2 - December 19, 2008       

 Transition (IELP 199)/Graduate Transition (IELP 499):

Monday - Thursday        1:00 pm-3:00 pm  

Description: This is an intensive 16-week / 160- hour integrated skills course for transition- level non-native speakers of English.  In this course, students will improve the accuracy and speed at which spoken and written English are comprehended.  They will also improve the effectiveness of their speech and writing through a variety of task-based activities.  Students will become familiar with strategies for analyzing and responding to authentic texts, for composing expository and argumentative pieces, and for writing timed essays.   In addition, students will acquire knowledge of level-appropriate structures of English grammar.  

  • To enter the transition course, students must take an entrance exam
  • Simultaneously, students enroll in two regular university credit-bearing courses in their major field of study.  ($1,920 plus $55.00 registration fee)
  • Undergraduate students can earn 3 credits for IELP 199
