NEW BRITAIN – June 19 2008 – GetEducated.com,
the only national clearinghouse in the USA
dedicated exclusively to showcasing accredited
online degree opportunities has ranked CCSU’s MS
in Data Mining a distance learning “Best Buy.”
The CCSU program was the first of its kind in
the world when it was launched in 2001.
Created by Professor of Mathematical Sciences
Daniel T. Larose, the CCSU program had also been
spotlighted by GetEducated.com in the past.
Dr. Larose has authored or co-authored a
number of books on the data mining and related
topics including an undergraduate statistics
textbook, Discovering Statistics, due to
be published by W.H. Freeman in 2009. Since
1998, he has taught dozens of online courses, in
both statistics and data mining.
"CCSU remains the only University in the world
to offer a Master of Science degree in data
mining that is available completely online,”
said Dr. Larose. “All courses are developed and
taught by experienced doctoral-level faculty who
are experts in their fields. About half of our
students already have a master’s degree, and
around 15 percent have earned a Ph.D.” Dr.
Larose also pointed out that “Most of our
students are mid-career professionals looking to
retool for the 21st century. The online nature
of the program eliminates traditional barriers
of time and distance, allowing full-time
workers access to CCSU's cutting-edge data
mining programs. This award,” he stated, “would
not have been possible without the staunch
support of Provost Carl Lovitt, Dean Susan
Pease, Dean Paulette Lemma, and Department Chair
Timothy Craine.
More than half a million potential students
visit GetEducated.com each year seeking advice
on distance learning programs. Its Best Buy
designation indicates that CCSU’s Data Mining
Masters “has been reviewed and judged to offer a
high quality distance degree to a national
audience at tuition rates well below the
national average.”
The firm’s editorial review team made the
determination after studying nearly 70 competing
options. In a letter informing CCSU of its
current selection, a company spokesperson wrote,
“GetEducated.com congratulates you on your
contribution toward making quality education
more accessible through innovative delivery
methods coupled with fiscally responsive
practices.” The communication added, “We
launched our national Best Buy award program to
spotlight and promote the true affordable gems
of higher education. We are pleased to recommend
your program as a Best Buy.” Among the
other institutions achieving the Best Buy
designation are Florida State University,
Colorado State University and North Carolina
State University.
