Accounting is often considered to be the "language of business." Managers of companies use accounting information to help them with planning, controlling, and decision-making activities associated with their organizations. The accounting program within the Accounting Department of the School of Business at Central Connecticut State University prepares its graduates for challenging positions in the business world. Alumni of our program currently have industry positions such as auditors in public accounting firms, internal auditors in insurance companies, management accountants in manufacturing firms, accountants in both State and Federal government agencies (including positions as special agents for the FBI), and management consultants in consulting firms.

CURRICULUM-UNDERGRADUATE

The accounting program has been modernized within the past several years in order to meet the changing demands of the business world for accounting graduates. For example, due to the extensive use of computers by business firms, accountants working in industry today are performing less and less "bookkeeping-type work." Rather than being the bookkeeper types of persons, accountants are working directly with firms' managers in such functions as planning future business operations, controlling day-to-day operating activities so that efficiency and effectiveness occurs within the firms' systems, and aiding managers in making daily business decisions. The accounting program here at Central is focused on preparing our accounting graduates to perform the above types of functions.

Among the required courses that all accounting majors take are cost accounting, intermediate financial accounting, tax accounting, accounting information systems, and auditing. Elective courses can be taken in such areas as governmental accounting, internal auditing, estates and trusts, advanced cost accounting, advanced financial accounting, and advanced tax accounting. Our department also offers our majors the opportunity for independent studies with individual faculty members on particular accounting topics.

FACULTY

All of the faculty within the Accounting Department have practical business experience to supplement their academic degrees. The practical business experience enables the faculty to bring into the classroom what goes on in the real business world. On the academic side, our faculty have doctorate degrees from universities such as Arizona State University, Oklahoma State University, Michigan State University, Kent State University, the University of Georgia, and the University of Kansas. Besides their emphasis on excellence in classroom teaching, most of our faculty are involved in additional activities such as writing college textbooks, publishing articles in professional journals, presenting research papers at national professional conferences, and performing consulting work for business firms in the Hartford area.
