Twin Cities ranked in top 10 literate locales

Chalk it up to those long winters, our investment in education and libraries or perhaps just a bookish bent. St. Paul and Minneapolis both appear in a list of the 10 most literate cities in America. Minneapolis ranked No. 2, after Seattle. St. Paul edged onto the list for the first time this year, tying for 10th place with Cincinnati. The list is compiled by John W. Miller, president of Central Connecticut State University. He ranks the 69 largest American cities, taking into consideration newspaper circulation and number of bookstores per capita, educational attainment, library resources — such as the number of school and public library staff, number of circulating books and number of branch libraries per capita — as well as periodical publishing resources and Internet resources, such as the number of people who buy books online and the number of public wireless connections.
