SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN
THE NEW AND OLD GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENT

Terminology: 

Modes of thought and skill areas 

Study areas and skill areas 
61 semester hours  44-46 semester hours 
Literature requirement: Literature courses in languages and humanities acceptable Only literature courses with "L" designation may satisfy the literature requirement.
Remedial courses are non credit Remedial Course are credit bearing, but the credits do not count toward the required number for graduation.  Remedial courses must be completed in the first 30 semester hours.
Foreign Language proficiency requirement met by: 

3 years of high school study or 

passing placement exam or 

completion of a language at the level of 112 or greater 

Students may apply 111, elementary I language courses to Areas A or C 

Requirement met in the same way but elementary (111) courses in all languages will not count toward ANY general education requirement. 
International Requirement: 

Met by taking 2 courses designated as "I" courses, all I courses are study of the post 19th century (modern) world. 

6 cr. of "I" required, 3 cr. dedicated to Area B 

Study of the ancient world will also be designated as international 

6 cr. required can be cross counted with general education, major, or concentration 

6 hrs. Supplemental Area D Supplemental Area eliminated 
Mathematics requirement: 

6 cr. required , 3 cr. in math or stat 

Intermediate algebra pre-req. for all math and stat classes, but applies to old program as well

CS 115, will no longer be allowed to fulfill the mathematics requirement. Logic moved to Skill Area I

First Year Experience (FYE) course a desirable option for incoming students  One FYE course required of all students entering with fewer than 15 cr. may be taken while fulfilling a skill or study area. 
1 rec. recreation activity  University Requirement: 

PE 244 required of all students entering with fewer than 15 cr. 

Transfer students with 15 cr. or more may opt for skill courses 

Double counting between general education and major allowed for 6 credits in major and minor 6 credits allowed for Skill Areas and 6 hours allowed for Study Areas
