"Workforce Partners group hands out gold stars to city leaders"
(Special to The Herald)
NEW BRITAIN — In anticipation of the 2008 summer Olympics, gold stars were given
out to area leaders at the fourth annual Capital Workforce Partners Breakfast
last week in East Windsor. The theme of the event was “Go for the Gold,” which
served to honor the workforce’s stars of the year — including youth, business
and legislative leaders who have made great contributions to the Connecticut
community.
Capital Workforce partners is a regional workforce investment board. They
provide programs through public and private partner organizations to assist job
seekers and employers in achieving their goals. The workforce serves 37
municipalities in north central Connecticut, a total population of over 950,000
and a labor force of over 486,000, making it the largest workforce investment
area in Connecticut. The city of New Britain was a gold medalist at this
years’ breakfast with winners from three of the five awarded categories.
Shaniqua Barrington, from Pathways-Senderos was runner-up in the Youth category,
Anne Jones won the Belinda Price Memorial Award for the United Labor Agency
based here in New Britain. And Mayor Timothy T. Stewart won the local
Legislative Star of the Year award. Stewart was given the top honor for
his 10-year plan to end homelessness in New Britain and his role in bringing new
jobs to the community over the past few years.
Stewart said in his brief address that he was proud of the many accomplishments
he and other workforce partners have made in New Britain. “It is my
responsibility in a leadership position to create as many opportunities for
growth, wealth and skill development for the people that I serve everyday.”
He acknowledged Central Connecticut State University’s Institute of Technology
and Business Development, New Britain’s Human Resources Agency, Opportunities
Industrialization Center, Celebration Foods and OKAY Industries for their help
in improving New Britain’s growth. Stewart said he believes that a
sensible government should help create a skilled workforce and a decent business
climate. If it does that, he said, the jobs will take care of themselves.
“The crucial point is that unemployment and low wages are not a function of too
few jobs, as most politicians would have you believe, they’re a function of too
few skills.” U.S Representative Chris Murphy also won in the Congressional
category, but was not present to accept the honor.
