ITBD Plays an Important Role in Supporting Regional Business

Ever pass CCSU’s Institute of Technology and Business Development (ITBD) and
wonder “What goes on in this building?” One important function of the ITBD is to
hold conferences for strategic business meetings and other purposes. In fact,
over 30,000 people each year cross the threshold of the ITBD Conference Center.
On an annual basis we hold over 400 conference events. Don’t be surprised to
hear that in one day we can have the governor, state and federal legislators,
city commissioners, New Britain’s mayor, as well as recognized business
executives from across the state.
At the helm in the Conference Center is its Manager, Cindy Walker. Dedicated to
customer satisfaction and serving client’s needs, she arranges parking, room set
ups, meals, overnight stays for presenters and attendees at local hotels.
Cindy manages the 15,000-square-feet conference area, which has eight rooms
named after famous Connecticut inventors, companies, or contributors. The
Conference Center also features one room dedicated to computer training. Each
room has access to our Dell Wireless network for internet connectivity and is
equipped with computer carts, laptops, printers, TVs, VCRs, audio systems and
DVD players. A kiosk is also available on the third floor for attendees to check
local media, national news, and current activities at CCSU. Rooms are available
for full-, half-day, and evening events, and a variety of meal accommodations
can be arranged.
While the ITBD has had a demonstrable impact on many Connecticut businesses and
agencies, it has also had a significant positive effect on the New Britain
economy. Meals for many of our functions, for example, are provided by local
catering vendors, who often also benefit from “return visits” by ITBD’s
attendees. And a local New Britain retailer held a trade show at ITBD. They used
all eight rooms in the conference center hosting seminars, vendor booths, and a
luncheon for the attendees. As evidence of the kind of business-generating
exposure the ITBD can offer, this was the fourth time the retailer held a trade
show at ITBD, and invited customers came from across New England.
