  The Connecticut Department of Transportation will sponsor a series of workshops that will be offered to certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) firms. The workshops will be held at the  CT BOWD Center - Connecticut Business Opportunities and Workforce Development Center, located at the Central Connecticut State University-Institute of Technology and Business Development, 185 Main Street, New Britain, CT 06035. Preference will be  given to firms who have completed or are currently enrolled in the DBE Business Development ProgramThere is no cost to Certified DBE firms to attend.

New Workshops

 
 

Understanding Business Structures Workshop

  On September 5, 2008, the Connecticut Department of Transportation is sponsoring an Understanding Business Structures Workshop for Connecticut certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) firms. The workshop will be conducted by Caesar Anquillare of Anquillare, Ruocco & Traester & Co. of West Haven Connecticut. The workshop will cover the distinction and tax implications between Sole Proprietor, LLC, S-Corp., Partnerships and Corporations as a basis to help DBE firms optimally structure their business for competiveness and profit.
   

 

 

Understanding Financial Statements & Preparing for Income Taxes

   
 
   

On October 31, 2008, the Connecticut Department of Transportation is sponsoring an Understanding Financial Statements and Preparing for Income Taxes for Connecticut certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) firms. The workshop will be conducted by Chip Janiszewski Jr. and cover understanding your Profit & Loss Statements, Balance Sheets, Cash Flow Analysis and Preparing for Income Taxes.

Bonding & Financing Solutions Workshop

  On May 30, 2008, the Connecticut Department of Transportation is sponsoring a Bonding & Financing Solutions Workshop for Connecticut certified Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) firms. The workshop will be conducted by Ronnie Suggs of Suggs & Associates Insurance Agency and Bob Polito of Webster Bank. The workshop will cover the following:
    Bonding, Liens and Retainage – Ronnie Suggs
o Surety Bonds – definition, types, parties to, and General Indemnity Agreement (GIA)
o Bid, Performance and Payment Bond Guarantees
o Cost and obtaining a Surety Bond. Public & Private Project surety requirements.
o General Insurance Requirements
o What is retainage and what is a lien.

Financing Solutions – Bob Polito
o Types of Loans
o How to obtain loans, lines of credit and ‘short term’ loans
o SBA Loans
     

Future Workshops

 

**Additional workshops are currently being developed to address common DBE firms’ needs. The future workshop scheduled is ‘to be announced’.**
