CCSU collaborated with Real Art Ways in Hartford on a
multi-faceted program of Polish films, lectures, artist talks, discussions,
and social events from October through January. Dr. M.B. Biskupski, holder
of the Stanislaus A. Blejwas Endowed Chair in Polish and Polish American
Studies, noted: “POZA was curated by Polish-born and New York-based art
critic and art historian Marek Bartelik, who gathered works of 31 artists
with roots in Poland currently living in Poland, the U.S., Canada, France,
and Brazil. The artists represent different generations—the oldest born in
the 1930s, the youngest in the early 1980s.” Works included painting,
sculpture, photography, new media, video, and performances at Real Art Ways,
as well as projects located in and around Hartford. Curator Bartelik noted:
“Taking specific national and cultural distinctions, which evidenced
‘Polishness’ by their choice of artists, the show offered an open-ended
proposition that treated such distinctions as matters of choice and
awareness, rather than linking them to a specific geography or a place of
birth—all in an environment to encourage both nationalism and globalism.”
