Violence Prevention in Schools
Second Step® Curriculum Training
By Eileen M. Hurst, B.S., M.Ed.
This CEU-approved course of 6 hours is offered as a one-day intensive
workshop to instruct teachers and youth service agencies in the use of the
Second Step Violence Prevention Curriculum. Second Step® is a nationally
renowned curriculum used in preschool – grade 9. In a national study of
school violence prevention programs, Second Step® was proven effective in
reducing impulsive and aggressive behavior and increasing students’ level of
social competence. The curriculum teaches skills in empathy, impulse control,
anger management, and problem solving. Students possessing these social
skills perform better academically than their peers who lack such skills.
Attention, learning, memory and decision-making capabilities are all closely
connected with emotional control. Teaching emotional literacy promotes
good discipline and fosters a productive learning environment.
