Spanish on the Move

Spanish on the Move is a new initiative offered by the Department of Modern Languages, which allows students to accelerate their program completion through dynamic intensive courses in an immersion setting.

Students enrolled in any of these six-credit courses will travel to Spain, where they will be hosted by the University of Salamanca, in the historical city of Salamanca.  Over the course of two weeks, students will partially fulfill course requirements, while benefiting from the enriching surroundings of this extraordinary city.

Students with one year of college-level Spanish may register for Spanish 128, an intensive six credit course created to develop speaking, writing and reading skills, and awareness of Hispanic cultures.  It is the equivalent to the Spanish 125-126 language sequence.

Intermediate level students must register for the ML 400 courses, which focus on conversational Spanish and the Spanish culture for the exploration of which Salamanca offers a wealth of opportunities.  These courses will be taught by Professors Mejia and Uribe, from CCSU, and by teachers of the host Spanish university.  The program will have three main components:  Grammar, Conversation, and Culture.  Classes will take place in the historical palace, which hosts the School of Arts and Sciences (Palacio de Anaya), and students will be lodged in the University residences (if available) or with Spanish families.

Salamanca is one of the most interesting and beautiful cities in Spain, yet of a manageable size.  Only two hours from Madrid, Salamanca has the magic of a medieval city, and it summarizes the history and art of Spain in its streets and architecture.  Nonetheless, it has as many modern attractions as any other mid-size Spanish city:  good restaurants, sports facilities and theaters.

Class sessions will take place on the CCSU campus during the week prior to the travel program.  The travel component will tentatively take place May 28-June 15, 2008.  We will resume classes on the CCSU campus after return from Spain.

The cost of the program, exclusive of tuition and registration fees, is $2,595 per person, based on double occupancy and a minimum of 20 students.  This cost includes round-trip international airfare, airport transfers in the U.S. and abroad, double occupancy accommodations, meals, planned excursions, ground transportation and entrance fees to all required sites and the required supplementary insurance.
