Italian Language and culture in Perugia

Based at the University for Foreigners of Perugia, with which CCSU has a partnership agreement, this program is designed to build language abilities and cultural understanding in the ideal setting and with the intensity that only courses abroad can provide. Classes and laboratory sessions will be held exclusively in Italian by faculty from both CCSU and Perugia. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the treasures of the city of Perugia, once an Etruscan capital, and to visit selected sites of its region, Umbria (the very heart of Italy), and other central regions such as Tuscany, Marche and Lazio.

Courses will focus on oral and written expression in Italian, while presenting the variety and richness of Central Italy’s history and culture, including Etruscan and Roman civilizations, Medieval and Renaissance art and architecture, as well as design, handicraft, industry and agriculture. Students will be introduced to Italian daily life, as well as to the art, architecture, geography and history of the sites they are going to visit.  This program is a unique occasion for cultural and language immersion, allowing students to gain direct experience of both the Italian society and the educational environment of the host university.

While orientation meetings will be held at CCSU prior to departure, most instruction will occur in Perugia, according to the summer schedule of the University for Foreigners, offering intensive courses that last one full month. All participants are required to register for 6 credits and to meet with the course leader before enrolling in the program. The audit option is also permitted for either one or two courses. Students who wish to take 3 credits only, should audit a second course. The instructor will try to accommodate individual learning needs. Faculty and staff members are welcome to participate.

The cost of the program includes round-trip economy class airfare from JFK, airport transfers in the U.S. and abroad, 28 nights’ apartment-style accommodations, ground transportation and entrance fees to all required sites, and mandatory supplemental insurance.
