Old Japan, New Japan:

Buddhist Temples, Atomic Bombs, and Hello Kitty

This program has been designed to provide students with exciting experience as they explore old and new Japan, through visits to the cities of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kyoto, Osaka and Nagoya. Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been rebuilt since the utter destruction caused by the atomic bombings in the summer of 1945, and both cities now play a significant role in advocating for world peace.  Kyoto, thought of as the heart of Japan, charms visitors to this ancient capital of Japan, with its cultural landmarks, traditions, architecture, gardens and artistic performances.  Osaka, the second largest city in Japan, is located not far from Kyoto and offers insights into many interesting cultural aspects of both old and new Japan.  Between Tokyo and Osaka is the location of another bustling city, Nagoya, which offers wonderful hospitality to the international visitor.

The History component of the program will provide students with an overview of Japan’s history, from the pre-modern era through the modern era to contemporary Japan.  The course will focus on three major areas:  Japan’s pre-modern culture, including religion, the arts, and architecture, through the viewing of a performance of Japanese puppet theater, and visits to Buddhist temples and other cultural sites in Kyoto; the place of the West in modern Japanese history, through an examination of the Western presence in Nagasaki and a visit to the Meiji Village outside Nagoya; and contemporary Japanese culture, including Japanese education, Japan’s gender norms, and youth culture, through a visit to a Japanese elementary school and to sites of popular culture like America-mura in Osaka and the Manga Museum in Kyoto.

The Peace Studies program aims to deepen students’ understanding of the complexity of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and surrounding issues extending to nuclear proliferation/disarmament and conflict in the world.  We will visit the Peace Memorial Museum and the National Peace Museum Hall for the Atomic Bomb Victims in Hiroshima and Nagasaki to attain a better understanding of the material and physical destruction of the bombings and the legacy of the survivors.  We will also listen to survivor’s testimony in both cities.

Classes  will be held on the CCSU campus during the week prior to departure.  Post-program debriefing sessions will also be held on the CCSU campus on a date to be announced.

Note that participants of this trip should be physically fit to be able to handle a good amount of walking.

The cost of the travel program is $2,795 per person, based on double occupancy and a minimum of 12 students.  This cost includes round-trip international airfare, double occupancy hotel accommodations for the duration of the program and ground transportation and entrance fees to all required site visits.
