Faculty GrantsThe University is able
to keep classrooms vital and its curriculum geared to best practices
thanks to the support of grants that assist faculty research and other
scholarly activities. Last year was a banner year for the University. CCSU
won 31 awards that brought in $4.1 million for scholarly projects.
Representative of the quality and breadth of programming are the
following projects. In support of his study
titled, "Constraints on Negative Energy in Field Theory and
Gravitation,” Professor Thomas Roman (Physics and Earth
Sciences) won a highly competitive two-year, $50,000 grant from the
National Science Foundation. Toward the furtherance of our
instructional mission, Professor Daniel LaRose (Mathematical
Sciences) won $75,000 in grants from the CT Distance Learning Consortium
and $75,000 in matching funds from the Connecticut State University
System office. With this mandate, he is developing an innovative on-line
Masters Degree program in data mining. Some of the grants of the past year are designed to strengthen CCSU’s community outreach programs. In the School of Technology, Professor Stuart Bennett (Manufacturing and Construction Management) won support from the federal Mine Safety and Training Administration for his safety-training program for Connecticut surface mining and extraction firms. Under the direction of Professor Barry Davies, the Department of Reading and Language Arts (School of Education) has begun a federally funded three-year, $500,000 project titled, “Professional Development in Bilingual Reading Skills for Waterbury Teachers.” |
