German Consul General Dr. Wolfgang K. Vorwerk to speak on “The End of the Cold War and the Division of Europe” at CCSU German-American Day event on October 4; public invited

NEW BRITAIN – Dr. Wolfgang K. Vorwerk, Boston-based Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, will be the German-American Day guest speaker at Central Connecticut State University on Wednesday, October 4, at 4:00 p.m. in Founders Hall in the Davidson Hall administration building on Stanley Street. The event is open to the public and free parking is available in campus parking lots.

Consul General Vorwerk will speak on the theme "October 3, 1990 - Day of German Unity, the end of the cold war and the division of Europe - have the hopes for a better world come true? A retrospective and a look in the future by a German diplomat," and participate in a brief discussion at the end of his remarks.

Consul General Vorwerk‘s appearance at CCSU honors German-American Day, which was declared by Connecticut’s State Legislature following an initial German-American Day program at CCSU on October 6, 1983.

“CCSU has earned the designation as Connecticut’s Center of Excellence in International Education,” said Dr. Carl R. Lovitt, provost and vice president for academic affairs. “Consul General Vorwerk’s visit is important to us, as the university has long-standing academic partnerships with German universities, and has helped to develop a state-to-state partnership between Baden-Wuerttemberg and Connecticut. Central also promotes and encourages New Britain’s sister city program with Rastatt in Baden-Wuerttemberg.”

Dr. Wolfgang K. Vorwerk, who has been Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Boston since August 2004, is responsible for a consular district that covers Connecticut (except Fairfield County), Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont.

Dr. Vorwerk is a native of Würzburg in southern Germany. He graduated from Wuerzburg University’s law school in 1972 and joined the German Foreign Service in 1975. His major fields of academic and professional specialization are European and Middle Eastern Affairs. He holds a doctorate from Wuerzburg University and a diploma from the College of Europe in Bruges/Belgium, both in European Community law. During his Foreign Service career he has been posted to Moscow, Tripoli (Libya), Tirana and Algiers; and at home in Bonn, Bremen and Berlin.

Dr. Vorwerk came to Boston from the Berlin Foreign Office, where he worked for six years, first as Head of the Near East Division, then as Director for Near and Middle Eastern Affairs, the Maghreb and the Sudan with the rank of ambassador (Assistant Secretary of State). In these capacities he often accompanied [then] Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer to Israel, neighboring countries, international conferences, and to the U.S.

Dr. Vorwerk has fond memories of visiting the U.S. as an exchange student with the Experiment in International Living in the 1970s. During that time he received the Honorary Citizenship Award of the City of Minneapolis and an honorary award from Jefferson County, Kentucky. In addition to his native language, he is fluent in English, French, Russian, Arabic, and Latin.

The lecture is sponsored by CCSU’s George R. Muirhead Center for International Education, European Union/West European Studies Committee, and Office of University Relations.
