Central Connecticut State University Ranked Among Top Colleges for Gender Equity in Athletic Programs

NEW BRITAIN—March 25, 2002. In a special report on “America’s Best College Sports Programs” (March 18, 2002), U.S. News and World Report ranked Central Connecticut State University 12th in the nation among Division I colleges for its commitment to providing athletic opportunities for women. “This is a remarkable validation of our efforts to ensure that our female students have the same number of athletic opportunities as our male students,” said CCSU athletic director Charles (CJ) Jones, Jr. According to Lisa Meyers, assistant athletic director: “This is a tribute to our hard work and commitment to create more opportunities for women in athletics at CCSU.” Female athletes account for slightly more than 50 percent of all student athletes at CCSU, according to data compiled by the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act, which served as the basis for U.S. News’s ranking. Female students account for approximately 51 percent of the undergraduates at CCSU.

“It’s significant that CCSU offers not only equal opportunities but also quality opportunities for female student athletes,” according to Gene Gumbs, CCSU sports information director. “During the 2000-01 season, for example, the CCSU women’s golf, women’s indoor track, and women’s swimming teams won league titles.”
