NEW BRITAIN –
October 12, 2007 – Dr. Tareq Ismael, Professor of Political
Science at the University of Calgary in Canada, will be the
next speaker in Central Connecticut State University’s
Middle East Insights lecture series. His lecture " Iraq:
The Present Situation and Future Prospects," will be given
on Monday, October 22, 2006 at 5:00 p.m. in Founders Hall in
the Davidson Administration Building on Stanley Street.
Professor
Ismael’s remarks will be followed by a question-and-answer
period. The public is invited to attend the lecture, and
free parking is available in campus parking lots.
“Tareq Ismael is
one of the world's top authorities on Iraq,” according to
Dr. Norton Mezvinsky, Professor of History at CCSU and host
for the Middle East Insights lecture series. “He will
provide valuable insights about the present condition of
that troubled country and prospects for its future.
“Professor
Ismael has written many books and articles about Iraq and
about numerous other modern Middle East issues,” Mezvinsky
said. “His recent book, The Iraqi Predicament: People in
the Quagmire of Power Politics and his recent edited
book Iraq: the Human Cost of History have been highly
acclaimed. Cambridge University Press will soon publish his
newest book, The Rise and Fall of the Communist Party of
Iraq. Professor Ismael is co-editor of the
International Journal of Contemporary Iraqi Studies and
is the founder of the International Association of
Contemporary Iraqi Studies.”
Professor Ismael has
served as the president of the International Association of
Middle Eastern Studies. Among other honors he was awarded
in 1996 the Most Distinguished Scholar Award by the
International Association of Middle Eastern Studies.
Dr. Norton
Mezvinsky, who has the distinction of being a CSU Professor
and is a professor history at CCSU, organized the Middle
East Insights lecture series in 2006. He continues to
arrange for a variety of prominent Middle East scholars and
experts in diverse areas to speak at CCSU during the coming
semester.
The lecture
series is sponsored by CCSU’s Committee on Middle Eastern
Studies, the George R. Muirhead Center for International
Education, History Department, and Peace Studies Program.
