CCSU’s Dr. Raymond Chip Tafrate is co-author of new book “Understanding Anger Disorders”

Dr. Raymond Chip Tafrate, associate professor of criminology and criminal justice at Central Connecticut State University, is co-author of the new book Understanding Anger Disorders (Oxford University Press).

Tafrate and Dr. Raymond DiGiuseppe, professor and chair of psychology at St. John’s University, have worked for ten years on research about anger, with a view to producing the most comprehensive text on the subject.

As they note: “Since classical times, philosophers and physicians have identified anger as a human frailty that can lead to violence and human suffering, but with the development of a modern science of abnormal psychology and mental disorders, it has been written off as ‘merely’ an emotional symptom and excluded from most accepted systems of psychiatric diagnosis.”

In their new book, Tafrate and DiGiuseppe use clinical data and case studies to argue for a new diagnostic classification: Anger Regulation and Expression Disorder. They say that such a precise identification of a form of problematic behavior that has wide societal implications “will help bring about clinical improvements and increased scientific understanding of anger.”

The authors contend that theirs is the first book to fully explore anger as a clinical phenomenon and provide reliable assessment criteria. “It represents a major step toward establishing the clear definitions and scientific basis necessary for assessing, diagnosing, and treating anger disorders,” they write.

Understanding Anger Disorders has received high praise from leading behavioral scientists. “This new book goes a long way to filling the gap in our understanding of this critical problem. It is an excellent overview and analysis of theories, data, and interventions for anger and hostility,” according to Dr. Robert L. Leahy, President of the International Association for Cognitive Psychotherapy, Director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy, and professor at Weill-Cornell University Medical College.

Dr. Tafrate is a licensed psychologist and frequently consults with state criminal justice agencies. His research on the nature and treatment of anger has been published in scientific journals and books, and has been presented at conferences throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Dr. DiGiuseppe has also been widely published, and he is a leading researcher in the assessment and treatment of anger. Currently, he is developing diagnostic criteria for an anger disorder, and testing the effectiveness of treatment for anger disorders.
