Syria’s Ambassador to Discuss U.S.-Syrian
Relations at CCSU Lecture
NEW BRITAIN –
April 23 , 2008 – Dr. Imad Moustapha, the Syrian
Ambassador to the United States, will discuss
the current situation in the Middle East and the
status of Syrian-U.S. relations in the latest
Central Connecticut State University Middle East
Lecture on Tuesday, April 29 at 4 p.m. in Room
105 of the Vance Academic Center at CCSU. The
public is invited to attend the lecture, and
free parking is available in campus parking
lots.
“In addition to being a gifted member of his
country’s diplomatic corps, Ambassador Moustapha
is a leading scholar and academic of high
standing,” said CCSU’s Dr. Norton Mezvinsky,
host for the Middle East Insights lecture
series. “Previously, the ambassador served as
dean of the faculty of information technology at
the University of Damascus and secretary general
of the Arab School on Science and Technology,”
Mezvinsky said. “He is co-founder of the
Network of Syrian Scientists, Technologists and
Innovators Abroad (NOSSTIA) and is an active
consultant to several international and regional
organizations on science and technology policies
in the Middle East.
“For the last decade Ambassador Moustapha has
been deeply involved in negotiations between the
U.S. and Syrian governments. He is one of the
closest advisors to Syrian President Bashar
Assad. “Dr. Moustapha is a widely-published
writer and has appeared on numerous television
news programs in the U.S. and around the world.
He is a co-author of the UN-sponsored ‘Human
Development Report in the Arab World.’ He holds
a Ph.D. in computer science from the University
of Surrey in the U.K.,” said Mezvinsky, who has
the distinction of being a CSU Professor and is
a professor history at CCSU, organized the
Middle East Insights lecture series in 2006. He
continues to arrange for a variety of prominent
Middle East scholars and experts in diverse
areas to speak at CCSU.
The lecture series
is sponsored by CCSU’s Committee on Middle
Eastern Studies of the George R. Muirhead Center
for International Education, the Peace Studies
Program and the History Department. The series
is underwritten by Dr. Susan Pease, Dean of
