Spring Dance Performance Planned at CCSU
NEW BRITAIN – April
17 2008 - The Spring Dance Repertoire Concert
will be performed at Central Connecticut State
University’s Welte Auditorium, April 25
at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and open
to the public through the sponsorship of the
CCSU Department of Theatre and Dance and the
School of Education. The collaborative dance
concert features the choreography of
internationally acclaimed Jennifer Muller,
Joseph Albano, and CCSU’s professor Catherine
Fellows, dance director.
Among the pieces
being presented will be the world premiere of
Ishtar, performed by Sarah Rifkin and Eric
Carnes, solo dancers in the Albano Ballet
Company. This romantic, sensual, Babylonian myth
embraces the Goddess Ishtar’s adventures as she
descends into the underworld and is stripped of
her jewels until her soul is laid barren, giving
birth to life. The musical score is presented by
Vincent D’Indy and the set by Broadway’s Leo
Myer.
Catherine Fellows’
signature piece, Heartbeat, which
premiered on the Welte stage in 1988, is a
response to the devastation man creates through
injustice, war, and the environment depredation.
Americana, a celebration of American
attitudes, embraces nationalism, pride, war and
sorrow. Americana’s musical score is comprised
of the work by Connecticut’s Charles Ives and
other noted American composers.
Originally created
in 1988, also on Welte stage, American in
Paris is reappearing during this event. The
world-renowned score by Gershwin makes the
lively streets of Paris, re-created by Lester
Polakov, shine. The ensemble is a collaboration
of professional dancers, CCSU alumni and current
performers of the CCSU dance program.
Migrant Mother,
choreographed by Professor Fellows in 2007, will
be performed by cellist Julie Rybchinski, poet
Geri Radasci, and Fellows. The piece portrays
the life of an American woman in the 1940’s as
seen through the lens of celebrated photographer
Dorothea Lange.
Jennifer Muller’s
Speeds will be danced by students of the
CCSU Dance Program. Jennifer Muller and company
members taught this piece to the CCSU dance
company members this past Winter season. Speeds
was choreographed by Artistic Director Jennifer
Muller in 1974, to an original score of Burt
Alcantara, and has come to be known for its
celebratory spirit and virtuostic dancing.
