Award-winning Palestinian Director to Speak at CCSU

NEW BRITAIN (October 1, 2007) Famed Palestinian director Juliano Mer Khamis will speak at Central Connecticut State University, October 2.  His 3:30 p.m. presentation is scheduled to take place in the Black Box Theater at James J. Maloney Hall.  The event is open to the public without change.  Parking is available in the nearby Welte Parking Garage.

Mer Khamis is the director of The Freedom Theater which is located in the Jenin Refuge Camp, near the town of Jenin on the West Bank.  His appearance is sponsored by the Faculty for Israeli-Palestinian Peace.

CCSU theater professor Joshua Perlstein is hoping that the Mer Khamis visit will pave the way for a deeper relationship between the Palestinian theater and Central’s theater department.  Professor Perlstein is planning to visit The Freedom Theater next year and is hoping to bring a group of CCSU students with him on the trip.  He said, “I feel that the students will be inspired by the work he is doing and will see the theater in a completely new light.

Mer Khamis is the director of an award-winning documentary, “Arna’s Children,” which was shown on campus during his last visit in 2006.
