Asian expert to discuss North Korea’s strategic strengths
during 16th annual Japan / Korea / China Week at
CCSU, October 22 – 27
NEW BRITAIN –
October 17, 2007 -- Nationally noted Korean expert Dr.
Sung-Yoon Lee will speak on “North Korean Exceptionalism:
Strategic Strengths Born of Unparalleled Uniqueness” at
Central Connecticut State University’s 16th annual Japan /
Korea / China Week program, on Monday, October 22, at 1 p.m.
in Room 306 of the Robert C. Vance Academic Center. The
program runs through Saturday, October 27. All sessions are
open to the public at no charge, and free parking is
available in campus parking lots.
Dr. Lee, who is
Kim Koo Associate in Research at Harvard University’s Korea
Institute, is a frequent commentator on the BBC, National
Public Radio, New England Cable News, and other media. At
Harvard, he runs the “Kim Soo Forum on U.S.-Korea
Relations,” the Korea Institute’s seminar series.
On
Tuesday, October
23, Dr. Ki Hoon Kim, CCSU professor of economics and host of
the annual Japan / Korea / Week program, will demonstrate
Origami (paper folding handiwork) and Kirigami (pattern
cutting), traditional Japanese art forms, at 10 a.m.
in Room 320 of the Vance Academic
Center.
On Wednesday, October 24,
Hon. Yoichi Suzuki,
Boston-based Consul General of Japan, will speak on “Japan’s
Evolving Relationship with East Asia” at 11 a.m. in
Room 306 of the Vance Academic
Center.
Dr. Ki Hoon Kim
will present the lecture “The Economic Development of Modern
China, Japan and Korea” on Friday, October 26, at 10 a.m. in
Room 306 of the Vance Academic Center. A Korean native who
is also fluent in Japanese and English, Dr. Kim led
development of the New
Britain-Atsugi sister-city relationship, and his leadership
inspired the Japanese city, as well as many of his Korean
and American friends, to honor him by establishing a
scholarship in his name at CCSU in 1993. Kim has organized
Japan / Korea / China Week at CCSU for the past 15 years.
On Saturday,
October 27, beginning at 7 p.m., members of the Korean
Traditional Music and Dance Institution of New York will
perform “The Korean Traditional Music and Dance Program” in
Herbert D. Welte Hall on CCSU’s campus. The festive and
colorful program includes the fan dance, traditional drum
ensemble, Korean classical music ensemble, and other lively
cultural delights. The program is made possible in part by
the Dr. Mong Koo Chung/Hyundai Endowment Fund.
Prior to this
gala performance, CCSU will announce the first recipients of
the Dr. Mong Koo Chung/Hyundai Endowment scholarship.

Korea / China Week is sponsored by the university’s George
R. Muirhead Center for International Education, Center for
East Asian Studies, and Omicron Delta Epsilon international
honor society in economics.
