CCSU Students to
Perform Sondheim Musical Comedy
NEW BRITAIN (February 29, 2008) “Company,” an
early Stephen Sondheim musical comedy will be
staged March 4-8 by the CCSU Theatre Department,
in the Black Box Theatre, located in James
Maloney Hall on the Central Connecticut State
University campus. Performances will be at 7:30
p.m. each night.
A concept musical that takes place on the 35th
birthday of its main character, “Bobby,” the
play uses a series of short vignettes to detail
the character’s struggles with commitment as he
compares his life to that of his married
friends. The technique became a Sondheim
staple. “Company,” seen as groundbreaking was
among the first Broadway productions to deal
with “adult problems” through music. It won
several important awards.
Originally performed on the New York stage in
1970 there have been revivals in 1995 and 2006.
Sondheim wrote the words and music, while
George Furth authored the book in the original
production which was directed by the legendary
Hal Prince. The original resulted in 705 New
York performances and 344 in London’s West End
Theatre district, where “Company” also enjoyed
great popularity.
The local production will be directed by
Assistant Professor of Theatre Ken Mooney and
performed by CCSU students.
