New Britain’s First International "Mural Slam"
Set at CCSU
NEW BRITAIN –April
17, 2008 - Mural Artists at CCSU have announced
that their first international “mural slam” will
be held April 26 on the roof of
Welte Garage on campus. “We are excited that
this important cultural event is taking place at
CCSU. It will bring together graffiti artists,
mural painters, scenic artists, and others who
are involved in public art works,” said
Associate Professor of Art Mike Alewitz, CCSU’s
Mural Program director.
The idea of the mural slam is patterned after
poetry slams, which came to prominence in urban
centers in the last few years, Alewitz said.
Artists will be given a four by twelve foot
section of wall, and eight hours in which to complete
their mural.
Prizes will be awarded for the best work. The
public is invited to attend and watch the
artists create their murals. “We anticipate
that this will be one more important cultural
asset for the city of New Britain,” said
Alewitz. The Mural Slam will
take place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and volunteers are being sought to serve as
ushers and to assist the artists. To volunteer,
email
ccsumuralslam@yahoo.com.
There is a $10.00 entry fee for artists, but
there is no charge for spectators.
Further details can be seen at

Another venue for viewing the information is at
