Noted Library of Congress scholar John E. Haynes to speak on American family imprisoned as spies by former Communist Government of Poland at CCSU’s Milewski Lecture, December 6; public invited

NEW BRITAIN – November 30, 2007 – Library of Congress Political Historian John E. Haynes, a leading international specialist on the Communist Party in the U.S., will deliver the Annual Milewski Lecture in Polish Studies at Central Connecticut State University on Thursday, December 6.  His lecture is titled “The ‘Fieldist Conspiracy’:  The Bizarre Saga of an American Family Imprisoned as CIA Spies by the Communist Government of Poland.”

The program begins at 7:00 p.m. in Founders Hall in the Davidson Hall administration building on Stanley Street.  The event is open to the public at no charge, and free parking is available in campus parking lots.

According to Dr. M.B. Biskupski, holder of the Stanisłaus A. Blejwas Endowed Chair of Polish and Polish American Studies at CCSU: “Dr. Haynes is the author or co-author of ten books, including “Early Cold War Spies” (Cambridge University Press), “The Soviet World of American Communism” (Yale University Press), “The American Communist Movement” (Twayne Publications), and “Venona: Soviet Espionage in America” (Yale University Press), as well as many essays principally dealing with Soviet espionage in the U.S. and the activities of the American Communist Party.  He is perhaps the leading international specialist on the Communist Party in the U.S. during the Cold War.  In his lecture at CCSU, he will discuss a little known but fascinating story of international intrigue.”

Haynes, who received his Ph.D. in 1978 from the University of Minnesota, is also a member of the editorial board of the journal “American Communist History,” on-line editor of the historical discussion list on American communism, H-HOAC, and a member of the Advisory Board of The International Newsletter of Communist Studies and the German-language “Jahrbuch für Historische Kommunismusforschung” [Yearbook for Historical Communism Research].  He was the Library of Congress’s historical representative to the Incomka Project (International Committee for the Computerization of the Comintern Archive).

In addition to his historical activies, Dr. Haynes has served as the Assistant Commissioner for Tax Policy in the Revenue Department of the State of Minnesota and aide to two Minnesota governors and a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Representative from Minnesota.
