CCSU, American Savings Foundation Chair to Host Forum on Investment Policy, Banking and Credit

NEW BRITAIN – April 23, 2008 -  John J. Patrick, president and CEO of Farmington Savings Bank, and Gerard O. Haviland, principal of The Haviland Group, will speak at an April 29 forum focused on investment policy, banking, and credit. The forum is being hosted jointly by the Central Connecticut State University School of Business and the American Savings Foundation Chair in Banking and Finance. It is free and open to the public, but registration for the 7:30-9:20 a.m. is event required.

Mr. Patrick recently joined Farmington Savings Bank as its new president and chief executive officer after a highly successful term as president of TD Banknorth, Connecticut.  He will discuss the current banking environment in Connecticut and nationally as lending institutions rearrange their priorities and many giant banking and finance companies focus on liquidity issues as a result of the current international credit environment.  How does the current environment affect credit availability to consumers and corporations?  Will government intervention assist in the recovery or will it only serve to delay and perhaps prolong the current pullback in the real estate and financial markets?

Mr. Haviland has over 30 years of experience in financial affairs management and entrepreneurship ownership management.  The Haviland Group attends to a large client base of business owners, corporate executives, attorneys, physicians and other professionals.  Mr. Haviland will discuss investment policies and their impact on long term investment portfolio performance.    Are policies critical prior to developing investment strategies?  Are investment strategies and policies intertwined and reliant upon one another?  What should an investor focus on when developing an investment policy?

Brian Charlebois holds the American Savings Foundation Chair in Banking and Finance at CCSU.   He has more than 25 years of experience in banking and related financial services.  In addition to his duties as ASF Chair, Charlebois is president and CEO of Green Hill Associates, a provider of consulting, coaching and advisory services to private business, professionals and executives.

The American Savings Foundation is an independent charitable foundation dedicated to strengthening the community by supporting education, human services, and the arts, with a special emphasis on the needs of children, youth, and families.  The Foundation was established by American Savings Bank’s board of directors to give back to the towns and communities served by the bank for 140 years.  In 2003, American Savings Bank merged into Banknorth, Connecticut, and the American Savings Foundation became a fully independent private foundation.  To date, the Foundation has awarded more than $19 million on total grants and scholarships to the community.

The American Savings Foundation Endowed Chair in Banking and Finance at Central Connecticut State University was created in 2002.  The mission of the chair is to bring “real world” academic preparation to the people and institutions in the Connecticut communities historically served by the bank.

The forum will begin with continental breakfast on the second floor of the Robert C. Vance Academic Center on the CCSU campus. The conference itself will be held in Vance 105.
