Central Connecticut State University Hosts
Well-Attended National Endowment for the
Humanities Workshop
NEW BRITAIN – April
22, 2008 – Central Connecticut State University
hosted a National Endowment for the Humanities
Grant Opportunities Workshop for CCSU faculty
and representative of colleges, universities and
other Connecticut non-profits recently.
Dr. William Craig Rice, Director for the
Division of Education Programs at NEH presented
an overview of the National Endowment of the
Humanities and how institutions can receive more
funding. The National Endowment for the
Humanities is an independent federal agency
created in 1965. It is the largest funder of
humanities programs in the United States.
In the “Who We Are” section of its website, the
NEH notes: “Because democracy demands wisdom,
the National Endowment for the Humanities serves
and strengthens our Republic by promoting
excellence in the humanities and conveying the
lessons of history to all Americans. The
Endowment accomplishes this mission by providing
grants for high-quality humanities projects in
four funding areas: preserving and providing
access to cultural resources, education,
research, and public programs.”
Mrs. Dawn Pierpoint-Grzan, Director of Sponsored
Programs at CCSU organized the event. In
attendance were more than 40 faculty members and
administrators from Central, Eastern, Southern
and Western Connecticut State University, the
New Britain Museum of American Art and other
area institutions.
"This workshop provided information valuable to
those involved in important humanities
activities," commented Dr. Carl Lovitt, Provost
of CCSU. "We hope this NEH workshop will foster
new collaborations between humanities
organizations across the state of Connecticut."
Central Connecticut State University is a
regional, comprehensive public university

5,000 part-time students. More than 85 percent
