CCSU Middle East
Lecture Series Presents “The Challenge of
Terrorism,” Featuring Talks by Spanish Diplomat
and Terrorism Expert, and Washington Think Tank
Scholar
NEW
BRITAIN - (February 28, 2008) “The Challenge
of Terrorism” will be discussed by two top
experts invited to Central Connecticut State
University’s Middle East Lecture Series on
Tuesday, March 4 at 4 p.m. in Room 105 of the
Vance Academic Center at CCSU. The public is
invited to attend the lecture, and free parking
is available in campus parking lots.
“Javier Rupérez, the Spanish Consul General in
Chicago and previously the top United Nations
counter-terrorism expert, will join with
Professor Yonah Alexander, Director of the
International Center for Terrorism Studies at
the Potomac Institute For Policy Studies, a
major Washington political think tank,” said
CCSU’s Dr. Norton Mezvinsky, host for the Middle
East Insights lecture series. “They are two
most distinguished people to speak about the
challenge of terrorism in the world today.”
Consul General Rupérez holds degrees in law and
journalism from the Universidad Complutense in
Madrid and, since 2006, he has held the rank of
Ambassador within the Spanish Diplomatic
Service. Until last August, he was the Director
of the United Nations' Anti-Terrorism Unit and,
prior to that, he was for six years Spain’s
ambassador to the U.S. He is the author of
seven books and numerous articles for leading
Spanish and international journals. He has been
awarded Spain’s Grand Cross of Isabel la
Católica, as well as other high honors from
Spain, Belgium, the Vatican, the Federal
Republic of Germany, Portugal, Jordan, Egypt,
and other nations.
Yonah Alexander is one of the world's most
highly regarded academic authorities on
terrorism. He has written and edited over 60
books on terrorism and has established
departments of terrorism studies at Georgetown,
George Washington and other universities.
Professor Alexander is the Co-Director of the
Inter-University Center for Legal Studies in
Washington and is the Director of the
International Center for Terrorism Studies at
the Potomac Institute For Policy Studies, a
major Washington political think tank.
Professor Alexander is also a regular advisor to
U.S. Secretary of State Rice and to government
officials in many European countries and
Israel. Professor Alexander plans and
coordinates academic and political think tank
meetings about terrorism throughout the year in
Washington.
Dr. Norton Mezvinsky, who has the distinction of
being a CSU Professor and is a professor history
at CCSU, organized the Middle East Insights
lecture series in 2006. He continues to arrange
for a variety of prominent Middle East scholars
and experts in diverse areas to speak at CCSU
during the current spring semester.
The lecture series is sponsored by CCSU’s School
of Arts and Sciences, Committee on Middle
Eastern Studies of the George R. Muirhead Center
for International Education, Peace Studies
Program and History Department.
