CCSU Portal Technology Provides Campus with One-Stop-Shop Web Services

The Information Technology Department at Central Connecticut State University delivers “portal technology” to the University community, offering a kind of one-stop-shop that provides web services, delivers personalized information, and fosters community interaction.

To realize this objective, the University converted its legacy student information system to SunGard’s SCT Banner administrative and web solutions in 2001.  The Banner software consists of a set of integrated modules used to manage the University’s data on students, on financial aid, on finance, and on alumni. The University’s Banner web modules (called WebCentral) allows faculty and students secure anywhere, anytime, online access to the information they need.

The Banner web module for faculty provides system support for grades and course rosters, which means faculty can focus less on paper tasks and more on automated processes.  Likewise, the Banner web module provides students with 24x7 hours of accesses to information and services previously limited by location and/or hours of operation.

And in the spring of 2003 the University augmented its Banner web software capabilities.  The implementation of SunGard’s SCT portal technology allows for easy access to a variety of web resources such as e-mail, Banner web services, and delivery of personalized information, all of which can be accessed with a single username and password.  CCSU refers to SunGard’s portal as CentralPipeline. The significance of the CentralPipeline is that it creates a flexible environment providing fast and easy access to information, it fosters community interaction, and it facilitates learning.

In summary, the University’s web portal conveniently presents users secure anywhere, anytime, online access to information they need.  To enhance the portal experience, CCSU delivers personalized online content tailored to one’s role at the University.  The University’s portal is an example of innovative technology that fosters community interaction and facilitates learning.  The IT department looks forward to working with the campus community to discover new ways the portal technology can provide even greater service to all the University constituencies:  students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
