The Student Center is a vital and energetic building at CCSU.  Students, faculty and alumni know it.  Guests who visit us learn this right away.  In fact, many people refer to it as the ‘living room of the campus;’ the place where the hearthstone is set and the family gathers for warmth, food, discussion, and learning.

The student employees, administrators, graduate interns and staff believe in the description offered by the Association of College Unions International (ACUI): the Student Center “is the community center of the university, serving students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests.” More than a place, however, “the student center is an organization offering a variety of programs, activities, services, and facilities that, when taken together, represent a well-considered plan for the community life of the university.”

The Student Center team greets all on campus in much the same way that you would guests into your own home.  We work very hard to make sure every visitor feels welcome.  Our mission is to support the growth of the campus community.  By involving students in active participation in all we do in providing services and supporting programs, they are developed and educated in support of the university mission.

Sixty plus students manage the operation of our building all year round.  They open it, close it, supervise their peers, and manage student teams to provide the services offered.  These services include the campus Information Center, Central Reservations Office, The Breakers game room, AV-Technicians and the ever-important setup crew support for meetings and events.  They run our Box Office and work in our business office which handles $1.2 million a year in fees and reimbursements, and helps us manage the spending of the $450,000 in operating and student labor budgets.  They practice Service, Team, Autonomy and Responsibility (S.T.A.R) in our nationally acknowledged employee education program.

We have a tough customer with high expectations come through the building each day.  Between 5,000 and 8,000 students a day visit us, and their peers know that the quality of their service is determined by these students that they serve.  We utilize a graduate intern staff to do the education of these student employees and managers, a program that was introduced in 1966 by former President Dick Judd, the first Director of the Student Center.  We have been nationally recognized many times for our student education program, leadership in the use of technology, and our management of many campus-wide services.  These successes include automating the scheduling of all campus facilities that departments on campus now use, a campus-wide Box Office system providing tickets for bus trips, theatre shows and all athletic events. We were one of the first departments on campus to run our own website for student information and club support!

There is much more, so please visit our websites for more about what we do for students and the community.
