CCSU’s ITBD Thrives on Mentoring for Business Success
Rick Mullins, Executive Assistant to the President

  Rick Mullins

In 2002, Central Connecticut State University’s Institute of Technology and Business Development began redefining its services.  If you drove into our garage you couldn’t help but notice it was far from full. Our business areas were progressing, but not at the rate they should have been.  A strategy aimed at rapid change was implemented that included a new brochure highlighting the CCSU ITBD brand.  It employed the theme “Growth through Economic Partnership.”  The goal was to build relationships by becoming our “clients’ trusted advisor.” The strategy proved successful.

Five years later we are reaping the successes of the response we received from clients statewide.  In 2007, CCSU ITBD is clearly charted on a successful path.  To meet the challenges ahead we have redesigned our brochure which will be released at the end of this month.  The CCSU ITBD brand stays the same but, we’ve changed the theme to “Mentoring for Business Success.”  Like all progressive organizations, CCSU ITBD has to evolve to keep the momentum flourishing.  Change is good; CCSU ITBD has blossomed through growth in

partnerships between academia, existing businesses statewide, state agency collaborations, the federal government, workforce boards, the Consolidated School District of New Britain and community involvement.  Growth has occurred in all areas such as workforce development training, youth programs, business incubation and advisement, procurement and conferencing.

What is in store for future?  The addition of the SBA Small Business Development Center to CCSU brings a valuable resource to ITBD and the universities of the Connecticut State University System, with offices on the campuses of Eastern, Western and Southern Connecticut State University and the State Dept. of Economic and Community Development.

An additional CCSU ITBD employee will be added to our already full incubator program in the US Federal Highway\CT Dept. of Transportation Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Incubator.  We will host three KPMG-sponsored Executive Breakfasts dealing with timely business issues such as; The Make vs. Buy Decision and Tax Incentives and Risk Assessment Sustainability for Connecticut’s Business Community.

Our Training Center plans three open enrollment programs, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerencing (August), an Administrative Assistant’s course and Six Sigma Black Belt training (September).  A community based organization in collaboration with the CCSU Marriage and Family Therapy program will establish a business incubator at CCSU ITBD. Overflow to the city parking garage will continue to grow.  Additional CCSU offices will be coming to the downtown campus.  There will also be growth in conferencing activity led by the State’s Judicial Court Support Services Division which is currently holding daily seminars at our conference center.  Various state testing sessions are held on weekends.

Our next business networking event is the 10th Annual ITBD Golf Scramble on  August 27th with over 140 community and business leaders participating.  The popular tournament provides scholarship funding for CCSU athletics as well as the School of Business and the School of Engineering and Technology.
