Events For Students Produced By Students at CCSU
Dr. Scott M. McKenna, Ph.D., Director, Event Management

Dr. Scott M. McKenna You may know that Central Connecticut State University host events that are open to the public, feature performance companies from around the world, and are a great value. But did you know that the 3,900 events presented annually are done so almost entirely by student employees?

Event Management is the university department responsible for event scheduling, coordinating support services, and producing special events for most campus facilities. Three full-time employees and 27 students accomplish the hundreds of tasks required to bring an event to the public. Students are involved in all aspects of the production from the initial client contact through the final invoicing.  Our goal is to promote a student-run organization that efficiently produces quality events for our students and community. It is a system we have been using and continually improving over the past sixteen years.

We organize the student staff into three areas: scheduling and support

coordination, technical staff, and audience management. The scheduling and support staff students are responsible for working with clients and performers to coordinate the event and determine the services required. Student technicians provide for the specific technical needs for the event-- lighting, sound, media equipment, and wrap-up at the end of the show.

The student audience management team works to ensure that the lobby and dressing room are ready and guide, using signage, patrons from the parking garages to the venues. Their goal is to produce a seamless experience for the patron upon entering campus.

Each area has a student manager who is directly responsible for managing the area and coordinating efforts with the other areas. The three student managers report to administrative faculty, who specialize in their areas. The administrative faculty serve as mentors who provide guidance and insure adherence to the regulations, statutes, and policies that guide university business. Most students who work with us spend their entire four years at CCSU working in Event Management.  Many of our students have gone on to serve in professional positions at other universities and at nationally recognized performance venues.

Next time you attend an event at CCSU look in the control room, the lobby and the auditorium. The people making the event possible are students. Their education does not end in the classroom.
