Teacher Certification Guidelines/Admission to the Professional Program

Students are eligible to apply for admission to the Professional Program for teacher certification only after they have completed 45 credits (15 of which have been earned at Central Connecticut State University).

Standards for Admission to the Professional Program:

·        Successful completion of PRAXIS I, the State of Connecticut mandated basic skills

examination in mathematics, reading and writing, OR successful application for a waiver (See the university catalog for details on obtaining a waiver.)

·        A minimum of 2.7 cumulative grade point average for all undergraduate courses (including coursework from other institutions)

·        Specific prerequisite courses, depending upon area of certification

·        A written essay

·        Two letters of recommendation

·        An interview by a departmental team

In addition to the above requirements, a student seeking teacher certification must choose a Subject Matter Major in the case of Elementary Education, a Dual Subject Matter Program for Early Childhood Education, or a Major in the case of Secondary Education.  Each major requires between 30 and 53 credits.  A complete list of certifiable subject matter majors and majors follows on the next page.  Consult the School of Education and Professional Studies website for detailed information.
