Q. Can I change my schedule once I have
selected courses?
Yes. There are several ways of adjusting your
schedule:
Web registration: Students may register
for classes using the internet. Refer the Course Registration
Booklet for complete instructions.
Add/Drop: You may ADD courses to your
schedule until the end of the fourth day of classes.or until the date posted by
the Registrar. You may DROP a course up to the end of the third week of
classes, and no record of the course whatsoever appears on your
transcript.
REMEMBER: You must be registered for 12
credits to remain a full-time student.
WARNING: Failure to carry a minimum of 12
credits may affect Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and receipt of
certain federal, state and other benefits, including but not limited to
various financial aid programs, Veterans’ benefits and Social Security
benefits. Students dropping below 12 credits are ineligible for
participation in intercollegiate athletics.
Withdrawal from Courses: From the
beginning of the fourth week of classes until the end of the eighth week
of classes (mid-term) in a regular semester, a student may withdraw from a
course by completing a withdrawal form available on the Registrar’s
website at
www.ccsu.edu/registrar or the Enrollment Center/Office of Continuing
Education in Willard Hall. A “W” will be entered for the course on the
student’s transcript. During this period, approvals for withdrawal
are not required; however, it is strongly recommended that students
consult with their academic advisor prior to deciding to withdraw from a
course. In addition, students should be aware of the possible
consequences of reducing their course load to less than 12 credits, as
indicated in the warning above.
After the end of the eighth week of classes, a student
may apply for withdrawal from a course. The dean of the school
offering the course may approve such withdrawal if documented extenuating
circumstances, which justify withdrawal, are found to exist. Poor
academic performance is not considered an extenuating circumstance.
Students may apply for withdrawal using forms available on the Registrar’s
website at
www.ccsu.edu/registrar. Signatures indicating the
recommendations of the instructor and chair of the department offering the
course, as well as the approval of the dean of the school offering the
course, will be required. If withdrawal is approved, a “W” will be
recorded on the student’s transcript. If a student stops attending
and fails to withdraw officially from a course, a grade of “F” will be
recorded on the student’s transcript. In all cases of withdrawal, a
“W” does not affect the student’s grade-point average.
Q. How many credits should I carry each
semester?
You must carry at least 12 credits to be a full-time
student. Dropping below 12 credits can affect your eligibility for
sports, financial aid and housing. Changing to part-time status
(below 12 credits) can be done only during the first three weeks of
school.
The average course load is 15-17 credits per semester.
Don’t forget to factor in time for working, studying and participating in
University activities. CREDIT OVERLOAD forms can be obtained from
the Enrollment Center in Willard Hall for registering for over 18 credits.
They must be signed by your academic dean.
Q. What is Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP)?
Full-time students must successfully complete a
minimum of 24 credits of academic work per academic year to be eligible
for continued financial aid. Please refer to the catalog and
Financial Aid Office for specific details.
Q. Who monitors my academic progress?
IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO ENSURE THAT
THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE ACADEMIC PROGRAM ARE MET. To ensure timely
graduation, it is essential that you work closely with your adviser when
selecting courses.
You must apply for graduation through the
Registrar's Office one year in advance of your graduation date. As soon
as the Registrar's Office starts working on your 'graduation date' they
will run a Program Audit for you. The audit is also referred to as a
Degree Audit or a Graduation Evaluation.
You
always meet with an adviser before each semester’s registration, but you
are encouraged to meet often to discuss courses, academic work, career
plans, internships, or other matters. A list of academic departments
can be found in the Course Registration booklet.
Q. I’m not doing well in some of my classes. Who can help me?
There are many support systems
in place to assist you with academic problems.
Your classroom instructors are your
first source of assistance. Seek their help first.
Academic advisers are the main source of
support and information about your academic plans and programs.
Declared majors can make an appointment with their faculty adviser to
discuss problems. Undeclared majors can contact an adviser at The
Advising Center in Willard Hall 100.
The Learning Center, located in Copernicus
Hall, is committed to your academic success and will develop an
individual study plan with you. At the Learning Center, you can
receive content area assistance and learn strategies for improving your
overall study skills by participating in the Methods of Inquiry (MOI)
program.
Free tutoring in various subject matter areas
such as math, writing skills and accounting is available. Consult
your student handbook (HELP) or see an academic adviser for details.
Q. While enrolled at CCSU, may I take
courses at other colleges and universities and transfer the credits to
CCSU?
Yes. Permission forms to take courses at other
institutions can be obtained at the Admissions Office. Students need
to be aware of the fact that grades earned in courses taken elsewhere have
no effect on the CCSU GPA. Transfer credit equivalencies can be
found
here.
It is also wise for students to discuss the courses
they are planning to take elsewhere with the relevant department
chairperson. You should check the course equivalency book with your adviser
or Admissions BEFORE taking courses at another school which you would like
to transfer back to CCSU. Consult with your department chair if you
wish to take courses elsewhere that you want to apply to your major or
concentration.
Q. Can I substitute one course for another?
If you wish to substitute a course for a required
course in either general education or a major, you will need to submit a
COURSE SUBSTITUTION request to the appropriate department. Forms are
available at the Enrollment Center.
