GUIDE TO ADVISING

First Year Students
Goal: To acclimate to the university.
Concerns: Academic and adjustment issues.

Good advice to tell first year students:

  1. Ask your teachers for help with class assignments. You can contact your professors by e-mail.

  2. Read your mail. Make sure you check your campus mailbox often.

  3. Your advisor is listed in Banner.

  4. Placement in Math and English classes is determined by you SAT's.  The new writing SAT must be 450 or higher to qualify for Eng. 110.  Math placement is as follows:  450 or less places in Math 099, 460 to 490 student may elect the Math099/101 combo course, 500 to 540 must take Math 101, above 550 qualifies for college math or stats, above 600 with high school credit for pre-calc with a B or better may take math 152.

  5. Math 101 is NOT a Skill Area 2 course, and CANNOT be used for Skill Area 4. It IS a general elective that counts toward graduation

  6. You must take English 110 before earning 61 credits. If you do not, your requirement rises to Eng 202.

  7. If you placed in Math 099 and/or ENG 099, you must complete them before earning 30 CCSU credits. They do NOT count toward graduation. They DO count in your grade point average and toward your full time student status.

  8. All in-coming first year students and transfer students with less than 15 credit hours must take an FYE (First Year Experience) course their first year.

  9. If you have not chosen a major, The Advising Center has assessments which may help.

  10. All in-coming first year students and transfer students with less than 15 credit hours must take PE 144 during their first year.
