Academic Standards Committee Members Present: Deans: Rick Roth, Sharon Braverman Members Absent: Deans, School of Technology and Education &
Professional Studies; The meeting was called to order at 2:00 p.m. MOVED: To approve the minutes for the meeting of 10/7/03. Bob Dunne/Rick Roth. In Favor: All. OLD BUSINESS: 1. The question of Pass/Fail exclusions will be tabled until we can get more input from the registrar. 2. Sharon Braverman re-introduced a discussion about the possibility of reducing the length of the Drop/Add period. After some discussion, it appeared that there is some doubt as to whether this is actually under the purview of the Academic Standards Committee. Sharon and Rick Roth will talk about this, and Susan Gilmore will discuss the matter with Susan Petrosino, before our next meeting. 3. Bob Dunne brought two
proposals regarding Academic Conduct and The purpose of the measure is
to prevent students who have committed academic misconduct from avoiding the
consequences of their actions by dropping the course in question. Passing this
measure would enable a faculty member to assign an “F” in the course if
misconduct is proven, as provided for in the Academic Misconduct code. At
present, the student’s withdrawal means that the faculty member has no such
prerogative. A point was raised that the faculty member may still pursue the
misconduct with the Judicial Officer and that the university would have a record
of the misconduct, and that it may be inappropriate to allow a faculty member to
assign a grade to a student who has withdrawn from a course. After some
discussion, the phrase “before the eight-week deadline” was removed from the
proposal and a vote was taken. The measure passed on a 5-4 vote. New Business:
Meeting was adjourned at 3:10 by general agreement. Respectfully submitted, Christine Doyle and Sharon Braverman
