Spring 2008 Agenda

Items Proposed for Discussion

  • Proposal for Undergraduate Dismissal/Probation Policy

Replace the sliding scale of good academic standing with a minimum expected GPA of 2.0 for all students regardless of number of credits or full/part-time status.  For students with less than a 2.0 GPA:

    ·         After first semester with less than a GPA of 2.0 for all students (first-year/first-time, continuing, or transfer):

o   Probation – Probation letter informs them of an academic intervention (nature to be determined) and the dismissal/probation policy; expectation that they will be at 2.0 or higher by end of subsequent semester; offer opportunity to meet with representative of Dean’s Office to discuss academic status.  Letter will further emphasize that student is required to participate in the academic intervention or probation will not be granted should they need to petition for such at the end of the next semester.

    ·         At end of next semester for all students still having less than a 2.0:

o   Academic Dismissal – may be appealed to the Dean’s Office only for documented extenuating circumstances; non-appealable if it is mathematically impossible for the student to reach 2.0 by the end of the subsequent semester.  In absence of extenuating circumstances, Dean will have discretion to grant probation if the student has a 2.0 in the previous semester, even if cumulative grade point average is less than 2.0.

  • Creation of a Early Prevention/Midterm Report System to promote student success.  Background material can be found at the web site for Institutional Research and Assessment. Click the link for data on Graduation Rates
  • Proposal to address non-matriculated students with low GPA's taking up seats in classes. Should there be some policy for students who consistently enroll in classes and fail to perform to the level at which we require of our matriculated students?

Items Put on the Agenda for 2007-08

·         A discussion on the merits and procedures of correcting advising mistakes that lead to students being short credits for graduation

·         A discussion on the best method to deal with 099 credits on the transcript and in communications with students. (Plan in place by registrars office)

·         A review of the Council of Deans’ discussion and a review of the probation and dismissal policy

·         A discussion of the repeat course option when the course is no longer offered (no action taken -- had been addressed in the past)
